All Roads Lead to...

A month and a half ago, I was on the road across the country after only spending three full days at home in Saint Louis. I showed up at a random family’s house (and moved all my belongings in, including my espresso machine), walked into a job not even knowing where the front desk was, and told my honest testimony to fifteen random strangers. To the average person, that makes no rational sense.
It was an overwhelming list of unknowns that never ended. At our roundtable discussion on Monday, John Kyle encouraged us that believing in an infinite God as finite creatures promises unknowns. The problem is, I don’t like unknowns all that much. John Kyle then posed the question, “What if the person holding our unknowns loves us unimaginably?”
Amidst the newness of Capital Fellows and the anxieties that come with it, I have clearly seen the Lord’s hand and his kindness to me. He has intentionally woven our stories together and given me connections in my transition. Already in McLean, not only do I have a sweet connection with Ryan and Heather Laughlin from my hometown church, but I have found countless mutual friends, similar career paths, shared love for the Midwest, and more among the fellows. A few of my friends from Charlottesville have had the opportunity to visit and meet the fellows, and as I have come to expect at this point, quickly found crazy similarities. Even amongst my coworkers, barriers to vulnerability have slowly come down as we have shared life experiences and emotions. I have been reminded of Ephesians 4:4-6, which says, “There is one body and one Spirit–just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call–one Lord, one faith, one baptism, on God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (ESV). Despite so many different backgrounds, hometowns, and personalities, ultimately we are all united in Christ.
In college, it used to be a running joke that I could somehow find a connection to Saint Louis with anyone I met, even if it meant simply bonding over the best zoo in the nation. So, although I love to say, “All roads lead back to Saint Louis,” the Lord in his graciousness is reframing my perspective. He delights in weaving stories together for His glory, and this has been a great comfort to me!

Each week this year, they will invest in the lives of students by tutoring them in core subjects like math and writing, as well as assisting with the after-school program.
