leading, learning, listening

By Jack Miller

Last Friday, we began seminary classes. Rev. Dr. Irwyn Ince teaches our class on Leadership, Vocation, and Society. He provided us a discussion on the gospel-centric importance of uniting and celebrating a diverse world. He notably said the church should be the forward thinking entity of a culture. This concept struck me, causing contemplation on how I assist my church in moving forward. Rev. Dr. Bill Fullilove started by sharing with us his professional motivations and introduced us to the semester by teaching the present realities of a long known truth. His class is titled Kingdom Seminar.

Lesslie Newbigin said this in his book, The Gospel in a Pluralist Society:

"The congregation is the hermeneutic of the gospel. The only way to understand what it means to speak of God’s rule and God's reign is to look at a community of people who trust it and live by it. The church is a community that lives by the story, by the promise, by the vision that Jesus embodied. And it invites the world to see whether that story is credible by the way it lives"

Tutoring at Covenant Schools met me with humility – both from the students and myself. Students were elated to meet us Fellows. When each of us received our tutoring pairs, class erupted with jubilant claps and bright smiles. I have the previous Fellows alumni to thank for their indelible mark. As for myself, with little experience tutoring and kids in general, feeling incongruous came easy. I am learning to be present, listening, and responsible during these Monday afternoons. I hope I taught my students something about math in that process as well. I'm most encouraged that each Fellow will work with the same 2-3 kids throughout the full school year. With this opportunity, accepting discomfort and setting measurable steps of improvement are my goals for tutoring my two students.

About Capital Fellows. Capital Fellows is an advanced leadership and discipleship program for recent college graduates. Through graduate courses, a paid internship, one-on-one mentoring, and many leadership and community service opportunities, fellows develop and apply their gifts in real-world situations while learning to integrate a Christian worldview into all areas of life. Capital Fellows is a unique opportunity to live and work in the Washington DC area and to be an active member of a supportive community that seeks to serve the city with the love of Christ. It is also a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace while deeply exploring God’s design for us as workers and contributors to human flourishing.

Pray for the Capital Fellows

Thank you for praying for the Capital Fellows each week!

Please pray that the fellows continue settling into their jobs and with their host families well. Their seminary classes are well underway, as is Life and Leadership, an important time with some of our pastoral staff. Please pray for the fellows as they find a healthy cadence in each of the elements of the program.
