By Logan Richardson
I’ve begun to miss home in a pleasant sort of way.
Missing is a rare thing for me. Maybe it’s because I’m young and people are often telling me to look forward to the grand future ahead of me. If I’m gifted an average life, the odds are that there are many more memories ahead of me than there are behind me—more places to go and people I have yet to meet, before I can start missing them.
But moving away seems like it might be the first big step in a lifetime’s walk toward looking back. Perhaps it’s the act that first turns me into a misser. College was certainly a shakeup, but there’s something different about moving away. There’s no end date. There’s no day of graduation to loom over the whole experience and mark a clear finish line. Now that I’ve moved away I’m just away. It doesn’t mean that I could never move back home, but there’s no date that I’m expected to, no scheduled time when all of my friends and I will get kicked out of our dorms and our parents will come to pick us up. So I think that’s why I’ve now become someone who misses.
The surprise of it all is that I’ve found the experience to be more pleasant than anything. I’ve been able to see my home and my family in a new light, accented by the world I live in now. With deep gratitude, I can say that I love both worlds. Living in a new city hasn’t diminished the value of the world I grew up in, but I’m very happy to be where I am.
Capital Fellows is a time when reminiscing and gazing ahead are bound up together. It’s a chance to examine what got us here, and eagerly try to figure out where we’re going next. I am blessed to do it alongside kind friends and under the guidance of wise leaders. I cannot wait to learn more, to work more, and to love more. If the past few months are an indicator of what’s to come, the seas won't always be smooth, but I foresee an abundance of beautiful people and places and times to miss.

About Capital Fellows. Capital Fellows is an advanced leadership and discipleship program for recent college graduates. Through graduate courses, a paid internship, one-on-one mentoring, and many leadership and community service opportunities, fellows develop and apply their gifts in real-world situations while learning to integrate a Christian worldview into all areas of life. Capital Fellows is a unique opportunity to live and work in the Washington DC area and to be an active member of a supportive community that seeks to serve the city with the love of Christ. It is also a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace while deeply exploring God’s design for us as workers and contributors to human flourishing.
Pray for the Capital Fellows
Thank you for praying for the Capital Fellows each week!
As we continue to celebrate Thanksgiving, we are deeply grateful for the Capital Fellows Season 18. Paul gives us just the right words to convey what our Leadership Team would love for the Capital Fellows and each of you, our supporters, to know this Thanksgiving: "We ought always to give thanks to God for you, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing" (2 Thessalonians 1:3). Please join us in praying for the Lord to continue growing their faith and their love for one another abundantly more than we could ask for or imagine.
