Curious and Wonder-filled Faith

By Jessie Abraham

What does it mean to have faith in the Lord? What does it mean to trust in him? Maybe an

unexpected answer, but when one of my youth-group girls answered "curiosity" during our Bible study discussion this past Sunday, I was intrigued. I made her dig a little deeper, and she shared that we need to be curious about what the Lord is doing in our lives in order to have faith.

As fellows, we are launching into a season of unknowns. Questions like, what will I be doing for work next year, where will I live, plague the mind of a fellow. It is easy to become fearful of the future. Having faith in the Lord proves to be a little more challenging as we dive into job searching. However, the simple reminder of a middle schooler be curious. Lean into what the Lord has for you. Trust that whether it be good or bad, it is in His hands.

By leaning into curiosity, we also develop a sense of wonder and awe for the Lord, an

excitement for what he is doing. Have you ever seen this in a baby? When you are trying to get the attention of a child, they begin with curiosity, investigating a person with searching eyes. Accompanying this curiosity comes a sense of wonder for what they are exploring; an awe for the human standing before them. Children often embody these attributes, carrying with them everywhere they go a curiosity and awe for the world.

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus' call to become more like little children is an invitation to rediscover the world through the lens of wonder. When we develop the attributes of a child, we open our hearts to love the Lord more fully and have faith that he will lead us on the right path.

Jessie is a member of the Capital Fellows class of 2025-26. She is from Falls Church, VA, and is a graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic University. This year, she is working as an Ecclesial Fellow in the Missions ministry at McLean Presbyterian Church.

About Capital Fellows. Capital Fellows is an advanced leadership and discipleship program for recent college graduates. Through graduate courses, a paid internship, one-on-one mentoring, and many leadership and community service opportunities, fellows develop and apply their gifts in real-world situations while learning to integrate a Christian worldview into all areas of life. Capital Fellows is a unique opportunity to live and work in the Washington DC area and to be an active member of a supportive community that seeks to serve the city with the love of Christ. It is also a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace while deeply exploring God’s design for us as workers and contributors to human flourishing.
