The Fellow's Mission

By Micah Laperriere

During the first night of the Fellow’s opening retreat, John Kyle made two statements that I have continued to reflect on throughout this Fellows’ year. He said that when considering this year, we should remember two things:

“The mission is bigger than the tasks" and "Jesus' name, Emmanuel, means 'God with us'".

These two statements have given me so much hope and peace as I navigate all the unknowns of my life and as I participate in so many different activities this year. These statements have been drawn out deeper in class.

In Bill Fullilove’s Kingdom Seminar course, I am delving deeper into the incredible claims of the Bible and meditating on the overarching story of God remaking the entire world. The themes of Genesis come back at the end of the Bible when God says, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5 ESV). It brings me back to John Kyle’s statement of the mission being bigger than the tasks.

I know that I can rely on God to form and shape me into someone who can step into a broken world and make an impact. I am invited to be part of God’s story of transformative work. The promise that God is with us enables us to move forward with His mission for our lives — and this year is part of God equipping us for that mission.

I have been reflecting on what it means to live a life aware of God’s presence. I love that the last thing Jesus says to the disciples on earth is “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 ESV). It is with this promise of his presence — when I am trying to discern the next steps in life, navigating friendships and relationships and being stretched in community and service — that makes the difference. This year is helping me to focus not on the tasks but on the mission and to live a life aware of God’s presence with me.

About Capital Fellows. Capital Fellows is an advanced leadership and discipleship program for recent college graduates. Through graduate courses, a paid internship, one-on-one mentoring, and many leadership and community service opportunities, fellows develop and apply their gifts in real-world situations while learning to integrate a Christian worldview into all areas of life. Capital Fellows is a unique opportunity to live and work in the Washington DC area and to be an active member of a supportive community that seeks to serve the city with the love of Christ. It is also a unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in the workplace while deeply exploring God’s design for us as workers and contributors to human flourishing.

Pray for the Capital Fellows

Thank you for praying for the Capital Fellows each week!

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving in a few weeks, we are deeply grateful for the Capital Fellows Season 19. They are growing deeper in faith in Christ. They're working hard and digging into both the "taught" and "caught" elements of the Capital Fellows. Please join the Capital Fellows leadership team this week in giving thanks to God for the 15 members of Season 19.
